The Cost of Our Recent Bushfires

The Australian 2019/20 bushfires have affected so many and the repercussions are being felt worldwide, with outpours of grief for those directly affected.

I feel deeply for those who have list their homes and properties--I can't imagine what they will be feeling and going through. As a person who lives in urban Melbourne, I feel helpless. My small contributions to charities and opening up our home to survivors is the least I can do.

It wasn't until I allowed myself to see images of the animals that I broke down. The loss and pain for the estimated half a billion animals lost is almost too much to comprehend. And we are only halfway through the bushfire season.

Sim respectfully acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which I create and exhibit art. I pay my respects to Elders past and present, as well as to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the wider Melbourne community and beyond. Indigenous sovereignty has never been ceded. I acknowledge that I work and live on the country on which Members and Elders of The Wurundjeri people and their forebears have been custodians for many centuries and on which Aboriginal People have performed age-old ceremonies of celebration, initiation and renewal. I acknowledge their living culture and unique role in this region's life.
